🌊 Urge Surfing

There was a time when an urge felt like an emergency.
My body would tighten. My thoughts would race. Everything inside me screamed, do something now. Fix it. Numb it. Escape it. I didn’t know how to sit with discomfort, so I fought it or fed it. Either way, I lost myself in the process.
One of the most helpful tools I’ve learned in recovery is something called urge surfing.
Urge surfing isn’t about willpower or forcing yourself to be strong. It’s about learning how to ride a feeling instead of letting it knock you over.
Urges come in waves. They rise, they peak, and they fall. The problem isn’t the wave. The problem is when we panic and try to outrun the ocean.
Here’s how I practice it.
First, I pause. Not dramatically. Just enough to notice that an urge is here. I don’t label it as bad or wrong. I just acknowledge it.
Next, I locate it in my body. I ask myself where I feel it. Is it tight in my chest. Heavy in my stomach. Buzzing in my hands. Giving the urge a physical location makes it less overwhelming and more manageable.
Then I breathe into that spot. Slow breaths. Nothing fancy. Just enough to remind my nervous system that I’m safe in this moment.
I observe the wave. I remind myself that urges don’t stay at full intensity forever. They rise, they crest, and they come back down.
I stay with the feeling. I don’t distract myself right away and I don’t act on it either. I let it exist without feeding it and without running from it.
And eventually, I watch it soften.
Every time.
That’s the part no one told me early on. Urges always change if we don’t act on them. They may come back later, but this one will pass.
Urge surfing works because emotions behave like waves. You cannot stop them from forming. But you can learn how to move with them instead of being pulled under.
This practice has taught me something deeper than how to manage an urge. It has taught me trust. Trust in my body. Trust in my ability to tolerate discomfort. Trust that I don’t have to fix every feeling the moment it shows up.
If you’re in a season where urges feel loud or scary, try this gently. You don’t have to do it perfectly. You just have to stay curious long enough to ride the wave.
You are not weak for having urges. You are human.
And you are capable of riding this one. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
