30 Days of Gratitude

There was a time when silence felt so uncomfortable.

If it got too quiet, my brain would immediately start scrolling through every bad decision I had ever made. It was like my own personal highlight reel of regret. Sitting still meant facing thoughts I did not know how to process and feelings I wanted to run from. So I didn’t sit with them. I filled every quiet moment with noise, distraction, or escape. Usually gambling, sometimes shopping, occasionally reorganizing my entire kitchen at two in the morning because I thought maybe that would fix my life.

Calmness, whatever that was, felt unfamiliar. Chaos was predictable and felt like an old friend. It gave me something to chase, something to fix, something to escape into. Quiet meant sitting with myself, and no thank you. She was not someone I wanted to spend much time with at that point in life. I was not ready for that kind of relationship yet.

But somewhere in the work of recovery, something shifted.

Now, I crave quiet. I actually enjoy it, which still surprises me. I can sit with my thoughts without trying to outrun them. I can feel my emotions without needing to escape them. And when the silence stretches out, instead of panicking, I breathe. I let it be.

Quiet days used to scare me because they revealed everything I was trying to avoid. Now, they remind me how far I have come. I spend those precious quiet mornings writing, reflecting, and being fully present in my own life.

There is a peace that only comes after years of noise. The kind that sneaks up on you in the middle of an ordinary afternoon when you realize you are not in survival mode anymore. You are just living, breathing, being.

And sometimes that peace looks like sitting on the porch in your pajamas, sipping a Dr Pepper (I’m seriously trying to quit), watching the sun paint the Oklahoma sky with streaks of pink and orange, and thinking, “Wow, I used to destroy moments like this.”

Quiet days are not empty. They are filled with growth, acceptance, and the calm I spent years chasing in all the wrong places. Today, I am grateful for the peace that comes from being able to sit with myself, with every thought, feeling, and awkward emotion, and know that I am safe here.
