30 Days of Gratitude

For a long time, the hardest person for me to forgive was myself.
Not because I did not want to,
but because of the weight of my gambling harm
the choices I made in survival mode
and the hurt that rippled out from those choices
felt impossible to forgive.

I carried shame as if it were something I was meant to wear, a scarlet letter I could not take off.
I replayed moments I could not change
and punished myself for things I would never do today.
But healing eventually brought me to a place of understanding.
I could not move forward while dragging a past version of myself behind me.

Forgiving myself has been slow,
messy, and sometimes uncomfortable.
But every time I soften toward the woman I was back then,
the woman who was hurting,
the woman who was coping, the only way she knew how
I feel a little more free.

“Self forgiveness is not letting myself off the hook.
It is letting myself grow.”
- Read this as many times as you need to for it to sink in.

And as I learned to forgive myself, something shifted.
My grip on old resentment toward others loosened, too.
Not because they deserved it,
not because everything suddenly felt okay,
but because forgiveness is part of my healing, not theirs.

Today, I am grateful for self forgiveness
for the way it softens my heart,
for the way it opens space for compassion
for myself first
and then for others in a way that no longer costs me my peace.

Forgiving myself heals me.
Forgiving others frees me.
