30 Days of Gratitude

There is a tiny moment in life (and recovery) that does not get the attention it deserves. It is not dramatic. It is the pause.
The little breath you take before you react.
The moment where you feel everything in you bubbling up, and somehow, you catch yourself.
The space between the trigger and the chaotic aftermath.
That is where authentic healing lives.
Most of my life, I had no pause at all. When I was younger and not gambling yet, I survived by disappearing. I stayed quiet, stayed small, stayed out of the way. If I felt shame, fear, or overwhelm, I made myself invisible. That was my reaction.
Later, when gambling came into the picture, I hid in a different way. I avoided everything through the escape it gave me. If life felt too heavy, I checked out completely.
My reactions were instant, messy, and usually something I regretted five minutes later. I was running on instinct, panic, and whatever version of me could get through the moment without falling apart.
But now, most days, I get a pause.
Not every time, because I am still human and also in perimenopause, where my body randomly decides what to do for itself. But more often than not, there is a breath. A second. A moment where I can choose what happens next.
Sometimes the pause looks like me closing my eyes so I do not say something I will regret.
Sometimes it looks like walking into another room so I can breathe before responding.
Sometimes it looks like reminding myself that I am not in danger, I am just hormonal and overstimulated, and someone is talking too loudly near me.
The pause is sacred.
The pause is the moment my past meets my present.
It is the moment my old patterns hit a brick wall and my new self steps forward.
It is the moment where healing outvotes chaos.
The pause is powerful.
It is a pause before I believe the loudest intrusive thought.
A pause before I say yes when my whole soul means no.
A pause before I let fear tell me what kind of woman I am allowed to be.
A pause before the impulse that used to destroy me takes over again.
The pause is everything.
So today I am grateful for the pause button.
For the breath that breaks the cycle.
For the moments that remind me I am not the same woman I used to be.
For the space that gives me a choice.
The pause is not perfection. It is progress.
It is maturity, healing, and occasionally a hormone-fueled timeout.
It is me remembering that I deserve peace.
Here is to the pause.
The small miracle of choosing differently, one breath at a time.
